New book depicts 1903 transcontinental journey by automobile
In Remembrance of You by Holley Gene Leffler blends fact and fantasy to tell the story of her grandfather's historic cross-country automobile trip

VENTURA, Calif. (MMD Newswire) February 11, 2010 -- Author Holley Gene Leffler reaches back in time to help her 23 year-old grandfather on his landmark transcontinental automobile trip in In Remembrance of You.

In 1903, two men made a groundbreaking trek from San Francisco to Portland, Maine in a Curved Dash Oldsmobile. Lester L. Whitman and Eugene I. Hammond traveled for 80 days through mountains, deserts and mud on uncharted roads. The book recounts the two men's experiences traveling across the country and includes daily journal entries by Whitman and anecdotes by Hammond.

Almost a century later, Leffler, Hammond's granddaughter, took part in the re-enactment of his cross-country trip in a 1902 Oldsmobile.

Based on historical records of the original journey, the book seeks to demonstrate the challenges and rewards of the turn-of-the-century trip before highways, gas stations and road maps were a part of American life. Leffler honors her grandfather by sending him a letter back in time to help him on his trip.

In Remembrance of You is available for sale online at Amazon.com and through additional wholesale and retail channels worldwide.
