New young adult nonfiction book reveals life in U.S. during World War II through child's eyes
Peggy's Wartime Memories by Enid E. Haag offers a glimpse into a military family's life from 1930 to 1945

EDMONDS, Wash. (MMD Newswire) February 11, 2010 -- Peggy's Wartime Memories by Enid E. Haag strives to provide an American child's historical account of life on the West Coast spanning from the Great Depression of the 1930s to the end of World War II in 1945. "There are many published children's books about World War II from the experience of children who lived outside of the U.S., but few from the viewpoint of an American child dealing with war in our own country," says Haag. "I couldn't find one that tells about the lives of Army brats living through the chaos of the war years."

The nonfiction narrative follows Peggy as she recalls how her family was taken from a quiet life coping with the Depression in a small Montana mining town to a life of survival on the California coast that was threatened by Japanese invasion and shortages of basic needs. Peggy's family is then transferred to a small Arizona town where Italian prisoners of war are incarcerated, and they experience some semblance of normalcy before being moved again.

According to the author, Peggy's Wartime Memories relates events from her life beginning in Roundup, Mont., "My father was called to active duty with the Army soon after Pearl Harbor," she says. "The family moved with him to Carmel, Calif.; Florence, Ariz.; and Butte, Mont., until he was sent overseas. We then lived with my mother's parents on an Idaho farm, which was a time of experiencing how rural America coped with the war."

ForeWord Clarion Reviews says, "this charming, detailed, and easy-to-read memoir is appropriate for all ages, from older adults who lived through World War II to children wondering what life was like "back then."
