New collection of short stories explores controversies and dilemmas in modern life
The five short stories in Five Thin Slices of Truth: Author's Special Edition by Adolphus Herndon examine spirituality, racism, patriotism and identity

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (MMD Newswire) February 22, 2010 -- Adolphus Herndon makes his literary debut with three short stories and two novellas that create his first book, entitled Five Thin Slices of Truth. The paperback is spawned from often controversial real-life issues such as sexuality, religious dogma, faith, mental health, patriotism and issues dealing with self.

People today often have facades, says debut author Herndon, and in his collection of stories, he reveals how these facades often fail to offer protection from the slings and arrows of life. Employing poetic-like sarcasm, subliminal messages, dark comedy, drama and suspense, Herndon uses his stories as vehicles to look at the consequences of denying the self, which he feels almost always yields unhappiness and defeat.

In "Me and My House," a young boy fights against religious hypocrisy and being the neglected preacher's son. "Purple Hurt" tells the story of a private who has been fighting for his life long before he stepped into his army boots and went to Iraq. "Before the Morning After" explores the desire to deny one's sexual identity in order to fulfill roles and responsibilities imposed by society, family and friends. "The Rant of Roymon Bivens" discusses prejudice while "Angel on a Fire" aims to examine the need to believe in something beyond ourselves.

From grappling with establishing a relationship with God to resisting the way the media can push people to think about racism, the stories in Five Thin Slices of Truth focus on what Herndon feels are the crucial issues of the times. Says Melissa Monroe, co-founder of MediaWrite Communications, "Herndon is a fresh new author who brings real-life situations and stories to readers. His characters and various storylines make you keep turning the pages."

Five Thin Slices of Truth: Author's Special Edition is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
